Deacon was right about the rain. It went on, and on, and on. Each time we went out to see if the weather had calmed down, we saw nothing but trees blowing in the wind and rain drenching everything it could reach. I got tired of going back and forth between the entrance and the cave, so I plopped down and listened to the downpour.
When we got thirsty, Deacon put his hands together and stuck them outside, letting water collect in them. He insisted on having me drink from his hands, instead of going out myself.
“I just managed to get you warmed up,” he said while I sipped. “I’m not going to let you undo all my hard work.”
I made sure to lick one of his fingertips as I finished drinking. “Oh yeah, real hard work, sitting on your ass with a hot guy in your lap.”
“Hey, you’re heavier than you look.” Deacon shook out his arm and tried to look pitiful. He wasn’t very good at it. “I think my arm’s asleep.”
“Yeah, I work out.” I flexed an arm for him. He laughed and patted my elbow.
“Liar. You’ve never been inside a gym in your life.”
“I don’t need a gym. Flying gives me all the exercise I need.”
Deacon nodded, and put on this super serious look that told me he wasn’t serious at all. “It shows.” He wiped away the fake expression, and his eyes went all half-lidded and sexy. One corner of his mouth lifted up, and my stomach did a big backflip. “You’re fucking gorgeous, Theo.”
There he went again, turning my world upside down. I talked a big game, so most people thought I was full of myself. They were pretty much right, but no guy’d ever called me gorgeous before. Not like this. Not like he meant it.
Gorgeous was a word guys used when they tried to pick you up at a club. “Hey, gorgeous,” they’d say, right before they shoved their cocks up against your ass and Hoovered your neck. When Deacon said it, it sounded true, not sleazy. It made me uncomfortable, embarrassed, and flattered all at the same time, and that was confusing as hell.
I didn’t deserve his compliments. The way I’d barged into his life, he should have wrapped me up and tossed me out on the curb for the police to pick up. But he didn’t, and here we were, together in a cave in a place he’d wanted me to see. Not because he wanted something from me—just because he wanted to share something he loved with me.
Deacon got a drink for himself, and I had an idea.
“Hey, I want to try something.” I waved him over.
He gave me a suspicious look, but he went along with it.
“I want to be the big spoon,” I said.
Deacon laughed and sat down in front of me. I leaned forward, wrapped my arms around his waist, and set my head against his back. His shoulders shook as he laughed at me, but I still held on tight.
